Mother Teresa Spartans looking to sweep!

By STEVE GREEN, The London Free Press
"I think we proved we can be the No. 1 seed, though," said Marcoccia, whose team is in a group with No. 7 Toronto St Mike's, Vaughan Brebeuf and Toronto Alighieri. "But at the same time, as I told the guys, we can't underestimate anyone, even the unseeded teams, because every team is at this tournament for a reason. "We're going to have to definitely step it up. What the guys did to win the (TVRAA) championship is one thing, to win an OFSAA is going to take a whole lot more. I don't think we'll have to change what we do, necessarily, but the intensity has got to go up a notch. Read more »

Central, which ended a 36-year conference title drought on Tuesday, now plays in its first provincial tournament June 2-4 in Kingston. "We've been telling ourselves since the beginning of the year that this was our year, and it's about time we finally did it." Central also got solid play from backup goalkeeper Ben Kelly, who replaced injured starter Harry Drew at the start of the second half. Read more »

'A' Final North Middlesex D.H.  ( 0 ) Vs London Christian D.S   ( 2 )-3:30 PM Location: London Christian

Wednesday, May 25, 2011 'AAAA' Boy's Final: Mother Teresa C.H.S. ( 4 ) Vs John Paul II C.H.S. ( 2 )- 3:00 PM
Location: City Wide #2
In the boys' final, speedy fifth-year forward Reece Benjamin scored in the 57th minute to break a 2-2 tie and added another four minutes later to propel the Spartans to their first conference title in five years. Dominic Nunziata put the Jaguars in front in the eighth and 48th minutes, Miguel Ferreira in the 29th and Jeremy Caranci in the 53rd minutes equalizing, before Benjamin put Mother Teresa ahead for good. 'We've definitely wanted this," Benjamin said. "At the start of the year we put a list of goals on a white board in our dressing room and this and OFSAA were right at the top. We were a little concerned (about falling behind twice), but we knew we had the depth, from the first Grade 9 to the last guy on the bench." Spartans coach Mike Marcoccia said staying calm was key. "I told them right from the start that, if we fell a goal behind, not to panic, to believe in the guys and believe in the team that we could come back. I've won a lot of games as a player and a coach, but this is one of the biggest because of the way we won. "We didn't change our formation," he added of the turnaround, "but we moved some personnel around to match up appropriately with what they were doing."

Jaguars roar after Raiders score

By STEVE GREEN, The London Free Press
By finishing a top a competitive top tier in TVRAA Central Conference boys' soccer and taking the No. 1 seed for the AAAA playoffs in the process, the John Paul II Jaguars probably looked at Wednesday's quarterfinal as a gimme. The Beal Raiders, however, had other ideas. For a while, anyway. The second-place finishers in Tier III took a shock eighth-minute lead and, despite countless Jaguars near-misses, almost kept that lead into the second half. But Dominic Nunziata's 44th-minute equalizer started the goalfest as the Jaguars went on to a 6-1 home win.

Crusaders hit stride at right time

By STEVE GREEN, The London Free Press
In co-coach Wendy Glover's words, the Catholic Central girls' soccer team was "all Swedish, no finish" this season. The Crusaders found the finishing touches Tuesday, though, beating the Banting Broncos 4-0 in a TVRAA Central Conference AAA quarterfinal on the artificial turf at City Wide.

Spartans Cantin magical on offence

By STEVE GREEN, The London Free Press Some say she could be a top-notch goalkeeper, but fortunately for the Mother Teresa Spartans, Lauren Cantin is much more content to score goals than stop them. The Grade 12 student scored twice Tuesday as the Spartans edged a game Titans squad 3-2 at Regina Mundi for their fifth win in as many TVRAA Central Conference girls' soccer starts. Cantin has scored in all five games.

Newcomers add depth to Vikings' experience!

By STEVE GREEN, The London Free Press

By their pretty lofty standards, the Lucas Vikings didn't have the greatest OFSAA boys' soccer tournament in 2010, failing to make it out of their preliminary pool. But what was then a fairly young team seems to have applied lessons learned to this season. The Vikings moved to 5-0 in the top tier of TVRAA Central Conference with a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Flames at Aquinas, Ahmed Tanashi finally breaching the Aquinas defence with a well-taken headed goal in the 82nd minute.
